Mary Jean Ryan, director of the City of Seattle’s Office of Policy and Management and chair of the Washington State Board of Education, today announced the mid-January launch of the Community Center for Education Results. The center is a new organization that will work to dramatically improve student achievement in South Seattle and South King County. The Seattle Foundation will provide fiscal sponsorship and office space for the nonprofit during its start-up phase.
“The Seattle Foundation is excited to help in the founding of this nonprofit. It is addressing an urgent problem that needs strong support now,” said Norman Rice, president/CEO of The Seattle Foundation. “Mary Jean Ryan has committed herself to improving education across the state. She is the right person at the right time to start this organization.”
Ryan plans to work with various education advocacy and community development organizations to build and implement a bold plan to improve results – pre-K through college. Building a strong parent and civic “call for quality” will be a major focus as will work to replicate elements of the very successful Harlem Children’s Zone.
“It is time for our community to make an important promise to the kids who grow up here,” said Ryan. “We will not rest until kids from all neighborhoods get the top-flight education they need to succeed in our challenging world.”
